The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
