Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
