Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, without initially offer further details.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major events preceding this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
